How do I make friends in Berlin as an expat?
Post a plan for something you were doing anyway and let people nearby join, or join theirs. Most of the people who answer will be newcomers too, which makes the first meeting easier.
Do I need to speak German?
No. forrealz! runs fully in English and German, and Berlin has a very large English-speaking population. To practise, set your intent to language exchange.
Is Berlin actually unfriendly?
Not really. Plans have to be proposed explicitly, because existing friendships are long-standing and the distances are big. Once something concrete is on the table, people show up.
Where do people meet in Berlin?
Cafes and bars in Neukölln, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, Tempelhofer Feld and the lakes in summer, climbing gyms and running groups year round, and language exchanges and Stammtische.
